WordPress How To,How to WP Beginners Guide – the basics

  1. ! Bookmark this article location so you can come back to it right now because I am going to give you a lot of valuable links for places to go to get started – and all of them have plenty of FREE information!

What is a Blog? “Blog” stands for weblog. Blogs started out as websites that contained a diary type of commentary usually about a core subject. For example, if you live “Off the Grid” your blog might chronicle the challenges of self sustaining living. It might also give people instruction in how to do some of the things you have done and contain links to suppliers or other interesting sites you have found. Blogs have since evolved into everything you can imagine. Some contain E-commerce stores, some are marketing tools to try to get you to buy a given product, some are political sites to get a political opinion out in the open, and the list goes on and on. A blog can be whatever you want it to be. BUT if you want people to visit your blog, come back, tell other people and maybe buy something that you are selling then your blog should follow these basic rules:

  1. It should contain information that people want or need or find interesting. If you think you can just get an automated tool to copy other peoples writing to your Website and then sell them stuff. You are mistaken. Most will realize that your “Content” (the articles, stories and opinions in your blog) is not original and they will leave and not come back.
  2. It should be updated regularly. Not every day but if you try to “set and forget it” (Write a bunch of content and then ignore the site for a year) People will stop coming and the search engines will stop listing your site and traffic will fall.
  3. It should be well organized, easy to find things and have a Theme that ties it all in together.

WordPress How To,How to WP Beginners Guide  - How do you get started Blogging?

This is the main question most people have and the answer is it really is easy! Thanks to common tools and lots of available videos and instruction guides on how to get started, even someone with limited computer experience can start a blog if they are just willing to follow instructions! So how do I get started? First decide what you want to Blog about! What is your “Theme” (what do you want your blog to be about?)? Do you want to blog about pets? Do you want to tell people your political opinions? Do you want to talk about hiking? Decide. Then make a list of the answers to these questions:

  1. What is my Theme? The Theme is the overall subject of your Website. Note that there are also WordPress Themes which are specific design templates for your Blog.
  2. Who do I hope will read my blog?
  3. How will my blog be unique and interesting?
  4. Do I want to try and make money off my blog?
  5. If so, How (If you don’t know how we’ll discuss that later on).

Second, Decide what kind of Blog you will Have – I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest you make a WordPress Blog. WordPress is software that enables you to set up a blog quickly. It provides a ton of functionality so your blog can look good, be easy to manage and add on cool features. Best of all it is everywhere and easy to get “hosted” (we’ll discuss that in a minute) easy to get help with and best of all its FREE!

I ALSO HIGHLY Recommend that you DO NOT go to WordPress and download the WordPress software like I am about to tell you how to do!  I only included this for those who need it!

What you should do instead you should go to the next section on Web Hosting and get a web host like one of the one of the ones we recommend that have wordpress available as part of the hosting package and that let you install wordpress with one click. That is a heck of a lot easier for Someone new to blogging then to try and download software, FTP it to the right directory with everything else involved.

THAT ADVICE ASIDE – You can go to www.wordpress.org and get free software Download! And tons of free instructions! As a matter of fact you can go to: http://codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging and get more advanced “getting started Blogging” instructions for free that tell you more about the features, terminology and functions involved with WordPress blogging!

OK so I know what software to get, how to get it and where to get instructions on how to use it. How do I get a blog up and running on a Website?

WordPress How To,How to WP Beginners Guide  -How to get a blog on the web –

Domains,Web Hosting, etc!     This portion of the WordPress How to, How to WP Guide covers Hosting requirements, free vs paid hosting, pro’s and con’s of each, recommendations and definitions with all needed links. If you are unsure of anything we are talking about in this “How to Host WordPress” guide. See the list of Definitions at the end of this article.

Quick Start How To Host WordPress Advice: Here is our quick advice on How to Host WordPress. more detailed advice is giving after the quick start section if you want to really think about this and get into the details.

With Paid Hosting you use yor own Domain Name -meaning you own your own Website like www.mywebsite.com. With free hosting it is on someone else’s Website basically. So your Website location would be something like: www.someoneswebsite.com/mywebsitename. or www.yoursitename.someoneelsesdomain.com

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you get your own domain and have it hosted unless you can’t afford the $6 or $7 a month for hosting or are a student or someone who just wants to have a Website to reach people and is not interested in it having a commercial value later on.

I have tried many webhosts and here are my two favorite free and paid places to host your Website:

1) FREE WordPress Webhosting (With free wordpress hosting you do not have your own domain): Do it at wordpress! They make it simple, fast and free. Only a few clicks and a little info and you are up and running. Click on this link for FREE wordpress hosting at www.wordpress.com

2) PAID WordPress Hosting NameCheap or GoDaddy- because they are fast and have everything you need and reasonably priced and have GREAT SUPPORT. I had my first Website hosted with Namecheap (I have 8 of my websites hosted at NameCheap Now But at this point I prefer GoDaddy as they have better support) and there help desk walked me thru every question imaginable (I could find no site like this to help me back then). If you want to know anything about how to host wordpress, they can help! They are also cost competitive, Web Hosting Highlights

  • Low Prices w/ FREE Setup
  • Namecheap uses the cpanel and Fantastico which is easier for newbies to learn
  • Godaddy has better support in my opinion
  • Free Spam Protection
  • GREAT PHONE AND LIVE WEB SUPPORT!! A must and what makes most others lousy by comparison
  • WordPress installs automatically with a few clicks
  • They have The FTP client you need
  • and the database software installed
  • and everything else pre-installed
  • You get email accounts with NameCheap as part of the price (some hosts (Like GoDaddy) charge you for this. You will want an email account like “admin@www.yourwebsitename.com” so people can contact you about your blog.
  • Web Based Control Panel (cPanel)
  • CGI, PHP, Perl Support
  • Anytime Tech Support
  • 24/7 Network Monitoring

They both also offer many plans. I recommend the “pro” hosting. at less then $6 a month it is a steal and gives you everything you will need for a long time. You DO NOT need their premium hosting.

3) Get your own domain name: I use Godaddy for this as well. When it comes how to host wordpress domains,  they have great tools to make this quick and painless. They are way better then anyone else for this!

How to Host WordPress – Domain Name Advice:Try to get a domain name that is relevant. meaning that it has to do with your blog theme and market niche. Meaning if you want to blog about the environment  “www.funwithnumbers.com would not make much sense. try to pick a name that is easy to remember.

Also remember that the suffix “.com” or “.net” or “.info” is not really all that important anymore as most of the good “.com” are taken. I DO NOT recommend paying a lot of money for a catchy domain name.

If you are seeking advice on how to host domains chances are you are new to wordpress and the cost of a high end domain would not be needed yet. The domain name value is over hyped (unless you are a company and it is the name of your company.

The search engines pay more attention to the Title of your page and its contents and keywords. People that search Google for a subject will pay more attention to the top ones on the list that is why you must do keyword research and Search Engine Optimization – SEO) and they will pay the most attention to your Website and web page description!!!

So if your site comes up #5 on google but your description talks about something else other then the search term, people won’t key on the link and they will never go to your site.

How to host WordPress definitions all about Domains, domane names and IP addresses: Domain -in simple terms it is the name of your Website like www.microsoft.com. Technically its A name that identifies one or more IP addresses.

IP Addresses are locations of a computer on the world wide web. They are a numeric address like 192.167.7.42. But that does not make sense to humans so they came up with Domain Names to represent them. For example, the domain name microsoft.com represents about a dozen IP addresses.

Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.pcwebopedia.com/index.html, the domain name is pcwebopedia.com.

Domain Tip – The suffix (.com or .net or .gov, etc) is less important then it used to be. I think the domain name is more important then the suffix. If you can get the .com name you want fine. If not .info, .net etc are all fine. Obviously don’t use .gov if you are not government etc.

  • gov – Government agencies
  • edu – Educational institutions
  • net – Network organizations
  • ca – Canada

IP addresses. IP Addresses are locations of a computer on the world wide web www). They are a numeric address like 192.167.7.42 Web Host – a company that has computers (servers) that they rent space on for you to have your domain and all its wordpress software run on.A good Web Host has all the software you need pre-loaded and has a high availability back up and  internet circuit so that your site does not “go down” or be unavailable at times when there are problems. In this How to Install Wordpress guide we will walk you thru a step by step tutorial on how to install wordpress. we also include links to other articles and software that might help you.

2) This will pop up a login screen. You must enter the name and password that you selected when setting up your web hosting account. If you don’t know it call or email your web hosting company to get it.

3) After entering your login and password you should be in the cpanel screen. If you scroll down the screen you should see a section that has software services available. It looks like this: how to install wordpress the fantastico main screen Fantastico is a software service that will automatically install wordpress for you. 4) Click on FANTASTICO and you should get the fantastico screen that looks like this how to install wordpress using fantastico 5) Click on wordpress on the left side of the Fantastico Panel.  It will then bring up  some information about WordPress and any installations of WordPress you may already have. Juswt click on “New Installations”. See the screen below: How to instal wordpress- Selecting new installation 6) The next step in How to install wordpress is to select the domain you are going to install wordpress in, login password etc. See the screen below and we will talk about each field How to install wordpress with Fantastico - step 6

PART 2) How to install wordpress by manually downloading it and installing it is next it is a lot harder and longer skip it if you can do the easy install outlined above

1) How to install wordpress- start by Download and unzipping the WordPress package, if you haven’t already. You can download the latest version of WordPress by clicking on this link. The file you are downloading is called latest.zip. you will want to save it in a folder on your PC and then “Unzip” the contents using an unzip utility like winzip.

In case you need it, I have provided a link to a free unzip utility called “Cam Unzip”.

2) For the second step of How to Install WordPress You will need to Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a “mysql user” id  so that you can access and modify the database.

3) Now go to the folder were you unzipped the Latest version of wordpress. In the file you unzipped Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php.

4) Open wp-config.php in an editor like notepad (NOT MICROSOFT WORD) and fill in the required database fileds (highlighted in yellow below as an example they are not in yellow in your wp-config file) These are available from your web host: define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘putyourdbnamehere); /** MySQL database username */ define(‘DB_USER’, ‘usernamehere); /** MySQL database password */ define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘yourpasswordhere); /** MySQL hostname */ define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost); IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH THIS OR THE INSTALL click on the following link to read more technical details on editing the config file at wordpress.org. Click on this link

5) Step 5 in How to Install WordPress is to generate and use your secret key password. You will need to install the files onto your server. This is usually done with a programe called “FTP” your web host will come with one. You can also download filezilla to run on your PC if you need to by clicking on this link

Step 6 You have 2 choices of places to install wordpress: If you want to integrate WordPress into the root of your domain (e.g. http://example.com/), move or upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress directory (but excluding the directory itself) into the root directory of your web server. If you want to have your WordPress installation in its own sub-directory on your web site (e.g. http://example.com/blog/), rename the directory wordpress to the name you’d like the sub-directory to have and move or upload it to your web server. For example if you want the WordPress installation in a sub-directory called “blog”, you should rename the directory called “wordpress” to “blog” and upload it to the root directory of your web server.

7) The final step in How to Install WordPress is to run the wordpress installation script You Run the WordPress installation script by entering the following install command in your web browser. (we will use the Website domain of www.mywebsite.com as an example).

  1. If you installed WordPress in the root directory, enter the following in your browser: http://mywebsite.com/wp-admin/install.php
  2. If you installed WordPress in its own sub-directory called blog, for example, you enter: http://nywebsite.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php

This will automatically install wordpress! And that is how to install wordpress.

You now should be able to log into your wordpress admin panel and start working on your blog by entering the following into your browser:

http://www.mywebsite.com/wp-admin This will bring up the login screen where you must enter your admin user name and password.

This is where you add such links.

Pages Tab – In WordPress you can have static pages that don’t change. This is where you set up those pages. Examples of these might include an “about” page where you tell about yourself and your blog. Or a “Splash” Page where you advertise something for sale or deliver an important message.

Comments Tab – This is like the Posts tab except it is where you monitor comments that people have made about articles on your blog. You can approve them, trash them, mark them as spma, comment on them yourself etc.

3) Enter a heading for the post A Title. It should be descriptive, 60-80 characters and contain the main key words for your article towards the front of the title. DO NOT try to stuff the title full of a hundred key words in an attempt to fool or attract the search engines. It won’t fool them and no one will bother to click on the article if the title that comes up in Google search results makes no sense.

4) Now click in the Main text box and start typing your blog article! The text box is like a word processing package like notepad or Microsoft word. You Website to the Plugins and search for Deans  CK Editor if you  want more editing features (like color highlighting text etc) BUT WARNING I find most of the advanced editors to be VERY slow!

5) Your article should be written for humans to read easily but with enough keywords to make sure that the search engines notice it for your key words. How many is enough or too many? That is a subject of some debate but if it sounds difficult or unnatural to read or overly repetitive then it has too many of the same keywords, If it has way to many the search engines will consider it trash and ignore it. On the other hand if it has so few that it has no central subject then you have either written an article about nothing or not taken the time to research what keywords people search on when they want to read an article like yours!

6) Once you have written the article go to the right hand panel and select a category for it to be grouped under,.

7) if you have included the keyword statistics plugin (if you haven’t you will want too)  then you will want to check the keywords, title and description that it is using for your article. If you want to change them you have to un-check the automatic box below each one in the Keyword Statistics section.

8) At any time you can click on save draft in the upper right hand side of the page to save where you are.

9) Clicking Update will update what you have done to the web.

10) Clicking on Preview will pop open a window and show what your post looks like so far.

11) If you forget to save it WordPress does a pretty good job of saving the latest version. When you go to posts and click edit you should see your post. Clicking on it will open it to edit. If there was a saved version it will say so in the heading area above the post
